Does Your Car Suspension Need Servicing?

23 COSGROVE RD, STRATHFIELD SOUTH NSW 2136

Is your ride bouncy, or does the car body sway when you corner? Do you feel every bump in the road through the seat and steering wheel? These are classic signs your suspension needs attention – and they're worth acting on sooner rather than later.

A failing suspension system doesn't just affect ride comfort. It directly affects braking performance – worn shocks and struts increase stopping distances significantly – and causes accelerated, uneven tyre wear that shortens tyre life and costs you more in replacements. In short, it's one of the most safety-critical systems in your car.

At Strathfield Mechanics, we use top-quality Monroe shocks and have the equipment and expertise to restore your car's stability and steering responsiveness. All suspension repairs and shock absorbers come with a 12-month warranty. Call (02) 8074 5449 or click here to book.

How Do Car Suspensions Work?

Most modern cars have independent front and rear suspension. The suspension system connects the car's frame to the wheels – springs and struts absorb road bumps and keep the body stable during braking and cornering. The shock absorber is a piston filled with oil; when compressed, the oil flows into a separate chamber and that resistance creates a softer or firmer ride.

Control arms, bushings, and ball joints allow the wheels to move up and down while keeping the car tracking straight – and when these components wear, the first sign is often uneven tyre wear or a vague, wandering steering feel. The wheel bearing connects the wheel to the control arm, and a worn bearing will produce a humming or grinding noise that's often mistaken for a mechanical repair issue.

Modern suspension systems are becoming increasingly complex – many cars now use multiple suspension links, which is why having a properly trained mechanic inspect them matters. Every car model has a different setup, but all systems include some combination of chassis, coil springs, leaf springs, struts, shock absorbers, and anti-sway bars.

Suspension checks are also a standard item in any logbook service – catching wear early during a routine service is always cheaper than letting it develop into a full replacement job.

We service suspension customers from Burwood, Concord, Greenacre, and North Strathfield. Drop in or call (02) 8074 5449.

Signs Your Suspension Needs Attention

Don't wait until something feels seriously wrong. Here are the most common signs we see that tell us a car's suspension is due for inspection:

  • Bouncy or wallowing ride, especially over speed humps
  • Car nose-dives when braking – this is a direct brake safety concern and needs attention fast
  • Steering pulling to one side – often tied to both suspension wear and tyre alignment
  • Uneven tyre wear – particularly on the inner or outer edges of the front tyres
  • Clunking or knocking noise on bumps or when turning – could be worn ball joints, bushings, or mechanical components
  • Vehicle sitting lower on one side

Suspension is also a primary inspection point in a blue slip inspection – if your car is going in for a blue slip and you're experiencing any of the above, have the suspension checked before the inspection to avoid a fail and the cost of a re-inspection.

Other Popular Car Services We Offer

Don't worry about taking your car anywhere else – we handle everything under one roof. A suspension inspection often reveals connected issues with tyres and wheel alignment, brakes, and general mechanical condition – and we can quote and fix all of it in the same visit.
