Blue Slips For Your Vehicle in Sydney

A blue slip – also known as an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection report – is required for all vehicles in New South Wales that have more than 3 months of expired registration. They're also required if you're selling a car without registration (number plates), or if you're re-registering a vehicle brought in from interstate or overseas.
Once your vehicle passes its blue slip inspection and is back on the road, it's also a great time to book a logbook service or full car service – especially for vehicles that have been sitting unregistered for a while and may need a thorough mechanical once-over.
A blue slip is also required for:
- Written off vehicles that have been approved for re-registration – this also helps identify stolen cars using number plates from wrecked vehicles
- Adjusting vehicle registration records to indicate a significant change, such as a new engine, ensuring the vehicle complies with manufacturer standards
- Clearing Police-issued defect notices
A blue slip lasts for 28 days from the date of issue and costs $66.00.

Because it's such a comprehensive inspection, vehicles that have been off the road for an extended period – or have come from interstate – often need some work before they pass. The most common issues we find are worn brakes, deteriorated suspension components, and auto electrical faults from sitting idle. The good news is we can fix all of that right here – no need to take your car anywhere else.
What Happens If Your Car Fails?
If your car has roadworthy defects and fails the inspection, you'll be issued a Repairs Needed report. You then have 14 days to have those defects rectified. Bring the car back to us within that window, and the re-inspection is free of charge – and since we can handle brake repairs, suspension work, exhaust repairs, and all other mechanical repairs on-site, most customers can get everything sorted in a single visit.
If repairs aren't completed within 14 days, you'll need to apply and pay for a new inspection.
Please note: you can only drive an unregistered vehicle for the specific purpose of obtaining registration, travelling directly via the shortest route to our workshop. If pulled over by police, you'll need to provide a CTP insurance certificate showing receipt of payment.
